Taking care of our customers and of their environments

Developing increasingly
Responsible product ranges

At Expanscience, developing increasingly responsible product ranges involves taking social, societal and environmental challenges into account across all the stages in a given product's life or a range of services.

It means, for example, adopting an eco-design approach for all our cosmetics active ingredients or all the products in our Mustela and Noviderm ranges.

And it also means providing people with services and advice on treating osteoarthritis and keeping their skin healthy.

Evidence of this approach
Can be seen on a daily basis in several areas

Responsible supply sourcing
(Expanscience’s own supply lines)

In December 2011, Expanscience became a member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), an international non-profit association set up to preserve the planet's biodiversity and ensure compliance with fair trade regulations.

In 2016, Expanscience acquired the Peruvian firm Deshidratados Tropicales, which specializes in sourcing and processing plant raw materials. With this acquisition, Expanscience provides for a more secure and more traceable supply of avocado and maca, two plant raw materials that play a strategic role in three of its business lines: Dermo-Cosmetics (Mustela), Rheumatology (Piasclédine 300) and Cosmetic Active Ingredients (Macaline, Skinergium, Avocado Perseose). Our product formulations

Our product formulations

Three key considerations are central to our product formulations: they must be safe, harmless and preference must be given to natural ingredients.

Reducing our environmental impact

From sourcing raw materials to products' end-of-life, we do all we can to reduce our environmental impact.

For example, the packaging used with our Mustela and Noviderm products provides them with perfect protection and is designed with the same care and according to the same strict requirements as our product formulations. So since 2006, we have been working on reducing its environmental impact.

This initiative is consistent with what is referred to as a “4R” policy in France:

Politique dite des 4R : Réduction, Remplacement, Recyclage, Repenser

Promoting responsible plant raw material supply lines

Our 2020 commitment

We will maintain this target across all our supplies of plant-based raw materials and guarantee innovative, environmentally-friendly extraction processes for active ingredients from plants, such as biotechnology and green chemistry.

2015 results

A CSR action plan has been implemented for 100% of our supply chains to preserve biodiversity and ensure that local populations receive a fair return.

Example of the acacia supply line

The Acacia supply line in Burkina Faso is a tangible example of this policy. While safeguarding our supplies of acacia seeds (which are used in Aqualicia, an ingredient with moisturising properties), we provide a group of harvester women with additional income and implement various initiatives to meet local requirements in terms of:

  • human development: these women are provided with training in organic farming methods and reforestation;
  • protecting biodiversity: combating desertification by implementing a project to replant the area with local plant species.

One of our main aims is to attract talent, develop it and then develop people's loyalty – in particular by being an attentive and responsible employer. This involves developing our employees’ skills and improving working conditions for them.

Bruno BOEZENNEC

Taking CSR into account on a daily basis means ensuring responsible practices in relation to healthcare professionals and patients. This also means doing more than simply providing patients with products and offering them real support.

Sophie LECLÈRE-BIENFAIT
IR&D Department

The impacts associated with human rights, working conditions, biodiversity and the patentability of living science are analysed and incorporated into our action plans. Our R&D commitment does not stop there: it concerns the entire life cycle of the active ingredient or cosmetics product.

Developing the EV.E.I.L.S programme (EValuation of Early Infant Life: the Skin). This study which investigates children's skin and how it develops right from birth, conducted in partnership with world-renowned dermatology researchers, has helped us to develop our Mustela Bébé range: we've been able to create products made from innovative formulas which are guaranteed to be effective, safe and natural… to preserve the wealth of cells in babies' skin.
