Plant supply chains

Plant supply chains

Creating “responsible” plant supply chains means enabling the development of active ingredients and quality ingredients while guaranteeing the security and sustainability of the supply and respect for local people.

For this reason, we implement our “responsible plant sourcing” policy:

  • By drawing on Standard ISO 26000 and complying with Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) criteria.
  • By relying on our “sustainable plant sourcing” manager based, in Mexico, a real intermediary with local populations and authorities.
  • By complying with international agreements, in particular the Nagoya Protocol, CITES convention,
  • By committing 100% of our supply chains to a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan of action: analysis of the impact of our plant supply chains on various levels: environmental, working relations and conditions, human rights, compliance with good practice, etc.

CO-DEVELOPMENT AND PROTECTION

In France, we focus on economic development of the area and producing all of our active ingredients there, as well as contributing to a local dynamic by making use of the byproducts of sustainable agriculture, such as plum kernels, cherry stones and lupin seed coatings.

It is also our responsibility to control the impact of the production of our products through firm commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as the consumption of water and energies, while depending as little as possible on non-renewable forms of energy:

  • In 2014 (compared with 2010): a 21.5% reduction in electricity consumption, 34.1% in gas consumption and 33.7% in water consumption.
  • All of our manufacturing processes are “green”: molecular distillation, plant extraction, biotechnology.

RESPECTING, AIDING, DEVELOPING

In Latin America, we have been working with local partners for 20 years. We strive to develop local crops such as avocado or maca, and focus on restoring and protecting local biodiversity, while promoting economic development:

  • Protection of over 1000 hectares of land in 2015 and fight against deforestation.
  • Use of non-exportable avocado fruit.
  • Improvement of employees’ working conditions (contributing to good conditions of hygiene, health and safety), optimization of procedures and/or agricultural practices, fostering of dialogue, etc.
  • Transfer of industrial know-how (fruit drying, oil pressing), as well as expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
  • Concerning traditional know-how: land cultivated for two successive years then left to rest for ten, drafting of ethnobotanical reports.
  • Setting a fair and equitable price.

DEVELOPING, FOSTERING LOYALTY, CREATING

With the support of local partners, we have identified several plant sources in Africa and in Burkina Faso in particular.
We are committed to procuring supply while working to preserve biodiversity and contributing to development of the local economy:

  • Encouraging the independence of local populations
  • Training in good agricultural practice, forestry practices or steering a woman’s group.
  • Financing organic certification: for example, over 50 hectares of Acacia protected and certified in Burkina Faso.
  • Use of non-exportable avocadoes in South Africa.
  • Aid with the schooling of more than 1,200 children since 2011 in Burkina Faso.
  • Creation of a nursery and plantations every year since 2013 with over 3500 trees sown (eucalyptus, baobab, acacia, moringa, etc.).
  • Campaign advance payments to partners / producers.
  • Postgraduate diploma student bursary funding.
  • Construction of warehouses and a child-care centre.

PROTECTING AND RESPECTING

In Asia, in collaboration with local partners, we guarantee good harvesting practices without the use of pesticides or other fertilizers pre or post harvest.

As in the case of other supply chains, ancestral know-how and traditional use of plants used are catalogued and published to combat biopiracy.

We are particularly interested in the properties of plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
